Borussia Dortmund: Youth Prospects
Argued to be amongst the most well-modeled clubs across Europe, Borussia Dortmund have established themselves as a hotbed for young and talented footballers for over a decade. Be it capitalizing on the opportunity to sneak ahead of Manchester United in signing the likes of Jude Bellingham and Erling Haaland or extracting the best value of players such as Ousmane Dembele, Christian Pulisic, and Jadon Sancho, among others, the club are known to have developed amongst the best transfer policies in recent history.
Dortmund have rarely undergone a loss vis-à-vis a player’s transfer value and are on course to continue with their modus operandi in the near future. With prodigies such as Donyell Malen and Giovanni Reyna amongst the ranks, the club are likely to attract more talent, provide them with a platform to shine in Europe, and sanction their dream move for a justified value for the coming season. Given the club’s consistency in qualifying for Europe and challenging for domestic honours all-year-round, Dortmund’s sustainable model undeniably makes them amongst the hottest attractions for footballers to develop and experience the biggest stage at a relatively young age.
With a wealth of talent within their set-up, the club remain unfazed in seeking the best value for their players. Given Dortmund’s ability to develop youngsters, provide them with reasonable contracts and respect their ambition to move to the bigger club’s across the continent, the German club are likely to continue nurturing young talent and capitalize on their value in, at least, the near future.
Jude Bellingham (Midfielder, England)
Amongst the brightest prospects at the club, Bellingham’s continued development in Germany has, arguably, helped establish himself as the most promising young midfielder across Europe, in recent seasons. After opting to move to Dortmund over Manchester United in the summer of 2020, the 18-year-old has lived up to expectations, having made a resounding impact at the German club, hitherto.
Owing to being a regular first-team player, the youngster has immensely contributed to the club’s UEFA Champions League results in recent campaigns and is likely to further develop his career at the club in the coming years. Bellingham’s remarkable performances at Dortmund earned him a national team call-up in November 2020, and the midfielder hasn’t looked back since.
Given the long-standing interest from numerous clubs to acquire his signing, Bellingham is likeliest to break Dortmund’s transfer record – currently held by Dembele (€147mn) – in the near future. Being amongst the most sought-after youngsters within the sport, although under a long-term contract – until 2025 – at Dortmund, the England international could potentially move to the Premier League as early as next summer, provided any club is willing to meet Dortmund’s valuation for the player.
Giovanni Reyna (Midfielder, USA)
Part of the upcoming crop of talented youngsters having made the USA’s national side, the 18-year-old has been amongst the brightest sparks at Dortmund since his arrival in January last year. Since then, the youngster has displayed remarkable performances across all competitions, having already registered 50 Bundesliga appearances and scored six goals providing eight assists in the league, hitherto. Besides, owing to the variety of world-class youngsters within the ranks, the youngster performances have, arguably, been overlooked during his time at the club.
Given his world-class potential and likeliness to follow the path laid by his national teammate, Christian Pulisic, Reyna could emerge as the next big-money transfer heading out of Dortmund. Although the youngster remains tied down to a contract until 2025, given his potential to improve and the likelihood of multiple clubs lining up for his signing in forthcoming seasons, the young midfielder could be yet another player departing for an exceptional transfer fee in the future.
Youssoufa Moukoko (Forward, Germany)
The Bundesliga’s youngster scorer aged 16, Moukoko has been a revelation since his days at Dortmund’s youth academy and subsequently breaking through the first team last season. Although relatively young, the forward has shone through having already registered 23 appearances for Dortmund across all competitions and scoring three goals since his promotion to the first-team squad. Additionally, the striker is also known for his fierce reputation as a potent threat in the box, having scored 141 goals in 88 appearances for Dortmund’s youth sides throughout his career at the club.
Although only 16 years of age, Moukoko is already in line to become the next promisingly talented youth product out of the Dortmund academy. While numerous clubs are expected to line up for his signing in the near future, it is likely the prodigious forward remains at the club for the majority of his career. However, given the German club’s model and the likelihood of acquiring a huge transfer fee depending on Moukoko’s development, Dortmund could cash in on the player and invest in developing the next big talent for the footballing future.
